Fires really damn odd, with a lot of backwards guitar and general spookiness. The rest goes down just about every familiar Bluesbreakers avenue to find something new, which doesnt happen.
John Mayall Bare Wires Rar How To Coherently DoIts clear that Mayall was starting to get bored of the trad British blues sound by this point, but he hadnt figured out how to coherently do something different. Not when youre going around calling your seven song A-side a suite. As the godfather of British Blues, Mayall had been a innovator of sorts and something evidently urged him to keep up with the progressive and psychedelic developments in pop and rock music when it came to his blues. Musically, Mayall was right: the deviations from his standard blues are much more interesting than anything else on here. The musicianship is top, electric guitars play off an understated rhythmblues horn section, Mayalls vocals are typically mellow. Some of the songs are pretty neat blues or folk exercises, most notably the jazzy groove of Open a New Door and Look in the Mirror, the psychedelic free jazz () bit called Fire and suprisingly one of Mayalls best acoustic folk blues ballads closes the album, Sandy. This is a good record for Mayall enthusiasts (and who else would buy his records). Trivia: the CD-release really overplays the suite-aspect, delivering side A as a 23-minute song which it isnt, its loosely connected songs of different styles having no compositional interdependence. Anyhow. In other news: spoiler: click to read Status: of Zeitgeist Interest Published 820 538-2 CD (1988). The musicianship is still there but I think Mr. Mayall is starting to change direction. Mick Taylors guitar work is fantastic, as always, but the over all feel of this record is kind of flat. RIP Dick Heckstall Smith RIP Andy Fraser RIP John Hiseman Published PS 537 Vinyl LP (1968). Zowat elke bluesgitarist van betekenis in Engeland passeerde via hem en zijn Blues Breakers. Daarop toont John Mayall waarom elke Britse bluesgitarist aan hem schatplichtig is. This record doesnt include any cover stuff which is nice I think since its always good to hear Mayalls own material. A-side of the album forms some sort of a medley but the ultimate stand-out tracks to me might be Open a New Door and Fire. B-side is called as Another Side and it continues the same pretty awesome way as the first side did. Mick Taylors instrumental Hartly Quits and the slow Killing Time could be the examples about the great quality of the side B. Im not giving five stars to this album since Mayall has released even more stronger totalities in his career. ![]() This one is rather subdued, low volume, prog influenced blues rock, with horns, and uninspired song writing.
